Taskmaster is a British comedy panel game show. The show was created by Alex Horne at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2010 which was later adapted for TV in 2015. The show originally premiered on Dave from 2015 to 2019 but was later acquired by Channel 4. The show features comedian and actor, Greg Davies acting as host or titular Assignor. He was the one who gave the most simple comedy assignments to the five contestants who participated in the show. These contestants or panelists are generally comedians. Greg Davies receives assistance from Alex Horne who acts as a referee during an assignment or challenge.
To date, Taskmaster has aired 85 episodes including three special episodes in 10 seasons. And as of now, Channel 4 has even renewed its broadcast for an additional six seasons that will come out in the next three years. The show has international popularity with changes made in Belgium, Sweden, Spain, Denmark, Norway, Finland and New Zealand. There’s even a US version available which only lasts one season. During the COVID-19 Pandemic, Horne started an activity at home called #HomeTasking where viewers can play together, where the winner is chosen by Davies. The show even has books and board games.
The game is mainly organized around simple and bizarre tasks given to contestants by Greg Davies. Being a Taskmaster, he is assisted by Alex Horne who helps set the challenge. These tasks are usually single tasks but are sometimes assigned to teams. These assignments are designed to force contestants to think intuitively and complete the assignment. Each episode begins with a Prize assignment where the contestants are asked to bring prizes according to the theme set by Taskmaster. This item is given as a gift to the winner of the episode. This is followed by a series of three or four previously recorded tasks that are typically performed in and around the Taskmaster home. This is a former ranger’s cottage situated on the outskirts of a golf course in Dukes Meadows, Chiswick
The contestants live at the Taskmaster house where they are given their assignments in envelopes which have been sealed with wax. The players have to open the envelope and read the task aloud after which they have to try and complete the task in their own way. This was pre-recorded and then shown to the audience. They were allowed to try and justify their method with Davies, who after scoring all attempts awarded points ranging from 5 to 1. Some episodes even had contestants complete assignments in groups of two and three. These groups have remained the same throughout the season, points are shared equally between team members. The final challenge was carried out in front of a live audience.
In addition to the daily prizes, the winners of the series were even awarded a trophy which was later replaced by a gold statue of Greg Davies.
