Pawn Film Plot

The film Pawn was selected as the opening gala feature at the 15th London Korean Film Festival. This is a family comedy drama that is a relief because there is something you can enjoy with your family. This film is set in 90s Korea where the two main characters are Sung Dong-il.

He is quite rude and grumpy. There’s Doo-Seok who is with his clumsy partner Jong-bae. They all worked as debt collectors for a quite successful businessman in Incheon. They were sent to collect a debt from a woman Myung Ha. She is a widow plus an illegal immigrant. He is struggling financially because he has a daughter to talk to. Realizing the woman’s situation, Doo Seok decides to take his daughter as a pawn to get a loan permit. The woman was a stone cold drink. His daughter is 9 years old, his name is Seung Mi.

They keep it as collateral until the debt is paid off. Being an illegal resident, Myeung Hu had to leave the country. She thinks about taking care of her daughter with Doo Seok. This way the daughter can be in safer hands. Initially, the men had problems raising children. But over time, the girl made them both more responsible and polite. They fall in love with the charm of a cute little boy. Currently, it appears that Seung Mi is an adult girl who is now a translator. He gets on a plane to meet someone he hasn’t seen for about 10 years and more.

The Pion Movie is a fun film by Dae Gyu-Kang which often feels like the plot is too ambitious, the narrative taking a back seat. The film is missing several characters that are meant to represent the intent of the theme.

Final Verdict

This film is one fine example of unrelated blood ties. Starting with actors, actors do a great job with acting as the skills can be seen. Sung Dong-Il and Kim Hee-Won’s chemistry really stood out. The description of the relationship is quite natural and appropriate. Also, choosing child actress Park So Yi added extra depth to the drama. This makes the film quite enjoyable to watch.

Their relationship felt very natural. It’s no wonder why they are veteran actors, and incorporating child actress Park So-Yi and other veteran star Ha Ji-Won into the mix makes for a movie that is much more fun to watch. Park So Yi looked adorable throughout the drama.

Actor Kim Hee-Won plays a different type of character than he usually does in other productions. He usually prefers bad characters but this one isn’t bad. He looks soft hearted and cute. Movies will be emotional but this doesn’t turn sad. There are several strong humor points spread in the film. It is an emotion that fluctuates when you watch the film. You can watch laughing, crying and laughing again.

Continuation…

There aren’t many bad things to say about the film. some minor things are lacking in it. The story is predictable enough that one can easily guess what will happen next. Easy predictions sometimes make you bored to watch. The film gets quite emotional at times which is more exaggerated. The story development is lacking in some ways or another. The scene changes in such a way that you won’t understand what happened before. The plot becomes very unrealistic knowing the kid bonded with them very quickly. Since he is a fully grown 9 year old kid, the connection settings will show a few fingers. The plot could be wider.

Overall the film Pawn is a quite moving drama that gives a beautiful message. It tells how sometimes people who are not blood related become better families than those who are blood related. You may cry several times or the emotions will choke you at some time or another. This is one of the family movies so you can enjoy it with your family too. This is of course a one-off show of the film or you can watch it more if you think the emotional film is great. The film was so-so and for a family drama, it was perfect.
