STARZ’s long-running show Power may have breathed its last last year. But in turn, it gave us more stories to follow in the years to come. It all started with Power Book II: Ghost. Now the same story continues with the new Power Book III: Right Raising. A show that will retell Kanan’s journey since he was a shy and smart kid. Destined by his mother to choose a noble profession unlike himself. But the opposite situation made him what he is today. Episode 1 of Power Book III: Raising Kanan has been released, and here is our recap and review.
Sascha Penn has created Power Book III: Raising the Right. In the first episode, we expected it to be the introduction phase for the series. In fact, the show does the same job. Plus, it has revealed to us a completely different world from other Power shows. It hits us back in time. 50 cents more votes tell the story of the Right. But that’s not the only story. There are some complicated people who became a part of his life and influenced and shaped him over the years. So without further adieu, let’s see.
Power Book III: Raising Right Recap S01 E01
The first episode of Raising Right opened in the early 90s. We opened the older young boys beating Kanan in the park. She ran to her house crying but instead of calming her down Right’s mother takes him to push him against the kids back. Similarly, again in the episode, we see Kanan’s mother come with her to her high school in the near future to discuss Kanan’s future with the principal. Next, we met cousins singing Right like in the Jukebox. Plus his crush, Davina, and his girlfriend, Buck Twenty. Also, Right’s crew also includes Shawn’s best friend, the “Famous” Figueroa.
The show then moves on to introduce Uncle Lou and Marvin Kanan as well as the quirky businesses and drugs on the south side. We move deeper into the world of Right being raised and how Raq’s mother wanted him to stay away from the street business even though he wanted to enter. At the same time, tensions rise between Unique, the biggest drug dealer, and his mother Raq, who wants to make a move. There is an attack on the family that haunts Right for the night. The next day Raq meets Unique to make sure everything is cool.
We then move on to the introduction of Kanan’s friend D-Wiz and a girl Juke is close with as well. Kanan, on the other hand, is a bright child, but he can’t help but be like his mother. This inspires him to abandon the exam midway and ask his crew to take down the baby thug who turns out to be Unique’s man. Right shot the thug, and it will haunt him forever. After a major devastation with the family, Unique’s crew attacked Kanan again.
Next, we met Malcolm Howard, the cop who thought he was the owner of the street had come to check what was going on in the neighborhood. The episode approaches Raq trying to cool things down with Unique again by offering money, but Unique says this won’t work. He accepts cash, deals and all, but there will be people coming for revenge. So, it’s come to the point that Right is now in business, and there’s no way out. So Raq lectures Kanan and lets him in to close the episode.

Power Book III: Raising Kanan Episode 1 Review
The first episode of Raising Kanan is nothing but a whole series of character and world introductions, which will be a bigger part of the story. That’s in future episodes of the show. We must say it is very much needed and the introduction is done in the simplest and best possible way. Furthermore, the story can run on its own without telling much about the characters, and we get to see them transform themselves.
The first one we encounter is the titular character Right itself. In fact, he’s not the same person we’ve seen in other Power Book shows. Actually Kanan is a timid child who became brave thanks to the way his mother raised him. He is a smart kid who can take on a noble profession in the future. But influenced by his mother, Kanan carved a path for himself to follow in her footsteps. So, the first episode is Kanan’s journey about a crying child who was beaten to death by a man. Then became part of the Southside Drug business. Now there is no turning back.
Coming to Southside Drug Business, the world has become the best for us. Also, how things are going around here. Unique is king, and Raq and Lou Lou are the underdogs trying to take over this time. It is certain that the drug business is not just a few businesses. This is an all-out war that will turn things around for the place. Especially for Kanan, who will grow in the midst of these opportunities, such as Unique and Officer Howard Malcolm.
If the action part is satisfying, let’s also remember the introductions of Juke, his girlfriend, and Famous, who probably served as emotional baggage for the show. In future episodes, they may influence Right or be part of the risk involved. This might make Kanan rethink his decision. That’s all for the recap and review of Power Book III: Raising Kanan Episode 1. Moving, the next episode of Power Book III: Raising Kanan releases July 25 at 8:00 p.m. ET on STARZ and will be available to stream on STARZ app and official website.
